Furniture Design evolves for many reasons. Sometimes form + function, sometimes price/value. Other times, a certain material may cause a design to evolve. In the case of what I call rePurposed , the design came from the piece, often an Architectural Artifact, or antique item that holds much more potential, than the function or purpose for which it was manufactured. I especially like this category of Furniture Design, because it is often the most playful and resourceful example of my skill as a designer and fabricator.
Take for example an old, crusty beat up ships chain. As it lay there in a snarled, tangled heap I thought to myself "she wants me to do what with THAT?" Seeing a beautiful circular dining table from it - takes vision!
Often, I'm asked "what can we make with THAT!" The process of repurposing or reinventing an object, often involves lively banter, bruised egos, and the constant reminder to keep it simple. Look at how the English window guards got repurposed into a fireplace screen.
A Chicago antiques dealer had a wonderful Aluminum Railing, with gorgeous Bronze Art Deco Panels, salvaged from a vintage Hotel. The designer saw it and wanted a Stair Railing and sofa enclosure made from the salvaged elements. But, alas, there wasn't enough to go around. So, with a local foundry, and talented Tool Maker, we cast some new panels, polished them, and made up the rest of the job from what was salvaged. The photo of the sofa enclosure was published in Robb Report Luxury Home Magazine.
Recycled, repurposed, or reinvented. They all are about creating other uses, for items that mankind has made, for one reason or another, and are no longer needed for that purpose. The process of making something old into new, may not make the Scrap Dealers happy, but it always provides a great back story to a new piece of Furniture.
